Welcoming a newborn into your home is a joyful and life-changing event. It also means preparing your space to ensure safety and comfort for your little one. From cozy sleeping solutions to safety measures, here are 10 must-have items for new parents.
1. Sleeping Arrangements
A crib is necessary, but for the first months, consider a smaller bassinet or a co-sleeper. Ensure the crib is up-to-date with safety standards, and remember, most don't include mattresses. Avoid soft bedding like pillows or fluffy comforters to reduce suffocation risks.
Waterproof mattress pads and at least two sets of crib sheets and lightweight blankets are needed. Remember, no pillows or crib bumpers for safety reasons.
Be ready for 70-90 diaper changes per week initially, decreasing after six weeks. You'll need a changing pad, alcohol-free wipes or soft cloths, a pail for disposal, and diaper rash cream.
Start with six onesies, a few infant gowns, receiving blankets, a sweater, a cap, and several pairs of socks or booties. Sleepers with front zips are also practical.
5. Bath Time
A baby tub, terrycloth towels, washcloths, baby soap, a gentle shampoo, a brush and comb, and round-tip nail clippers are essential for bath time.
Burp cloths and bibs are must-haves. If breastfeeding, you'll need bottles for pumped milk, a bottle brush, and a dishwasher basket. If formula feeding, stock up on formula and a measuring cup.
7. Baby Safety GateAs your baby begins to crawl and walk, a baby safety gate is crucial to prevent access to hazardous areas like stairs or kitchens. It's an essential tool for creating a child-friendly home environment.
A rear-facing car seat is crucial. Some models can be integrated with a stroller.
A breast pump is helpful for times away from your baby or to relieve engorgement.
10. A Reliable Baby Monitor
A baby monitor is essential for keeping tabs on your baby when you're not in the same room. Opt for a model with good range and clear audio.
